On 24th May 2025, the Rotary Club Rose Belle held a solemn commemoration to mark the 50th anniversary of the tragic road accident that occurred on 12th May 1975 at Vieux Moulin, which claimed the lives of 15 individuals.
The event began with a commemorative march, symbolizing unity, remembrance, and our collective commitment to road safety. Family members of the victims, community leaders, and Rotarians joined together in reflection and respect.
The ceremony was dignified by the presence of the Mauritius Police Band, whose musical tribute added depth and solemnity to the occasion.
The event was also honored by the presence of Honorable Manoj Seeburn and Honorable Anishta Babooram, Members of the National Assembly, who joined in paying tribute to the victims and showing support for the message of road safety and community remembrance.
As part of this historic remembrance, a stele (memorial plaque) was unveiled at the Vieux Moulin Commercial Center to honor the memory of the departed souls. The monument stands as a permanent reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safe driving practices.
The theme of the event was:
“Safe Drive Saves Life” – a clear message advocating for responsible driving and heightened awareness on our roads.
Speeches were delivered by key figures from the Rotary Club Rose Belle and the distinguished guests, emphasizing the value of remembrance, community responsibility, and the need for continuous road safety education.
This initiative forms part of Rotary Club Rose Belle’s ongoing commitment to community service, public safety awareness, and preserving local history.
